FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Author Cheryl Fimbel writes from inside her own retirement about the stage between surviving and thriving, roughly months 3 through 24.

NORTHLAKE, Texas — Crown Years Media has released The Messy Middle of Retirement, the second book in author Cheryl Fimbel's Retirement Journey Series. The book takes on a stage of retirement that gets little attention: the months after the first crisis passes, when new retirees are functioning but not thriving, and quietly wondering, "Is this all there is?"

Most retirement guidance focuses on the finish line: save enough money, then relax. But the harder question often shows up later. Researchers have long described a disenchantment phase that sets in after the honeymoon of early retirement fades, once the relief of leaving work wears off and daily life settles in. Sociologist Robert Atchley named it back in 1976. The panic is over. The purpose people expected hasn't arrived.

Fimbel writes from personal experience. After 45 years in healthcare leadership, her position was eliminated a year before she had planned to retire. The anxiety and identity questions that followed became the foundation for her work on the emotional side of retirement, the part traditional financial planning overlooks.

"I wrote this book from the middle of my own retirement, not the far side of it," said Fimbel. "Eight months in, I was busy every day and still couldn't tell my husband what I'd actually done. The money panic was over, and I felt flat. I think a lot of people hit that same wall around the first year and assume something is wrong with them. Nothing is wrong with them. It's a stage, and there's real work that moves you through it. I'm still building mine."

The Messy Middle of Retirement moves through nine chapters, each addressing a specific challenge of this phase: taking stock, rebuilding identity, money anxiety, getting unstuck, empty days, relationships in transition, purpose, integration, and planning for the decades ahead. Every chapter ends with a toolkit of practical exercises, and a companion workbook holds the complete set with room to write.

The book is available now in paperback and ebook through Amazon and, for retailers, through Ingram. Paperback ISBN: 979-8-9948962-2-8. Ebook ISBN: 979-8-9948962-3-5. LCCN: 2026920618. It stands on its own and can be read without the first book in the series, The Hidden Side of Retirement, which covers surviving the first 90 days.
